Michter’s US*1 Toasted Barrel Finish Rye: Review

You may have noticed recently, we’re on a real Michter’s kick. I absolutely loved the Michter’s 10 Year Old, probably one of my favorite whiskies of 2017. I was lucky to have made friends with my local liquor store owners to have access to that bottle. I was just lucky enough to have walked into another liquor store right after they got a delivery of this one single bottle, which I took off their hands. I’ve had my eye out for any of the “Toasted Barrel Finish” expressions for awhile. It did not disappoint. (On a side note, I just got a bottle of the regular Michter’s Rye. Stay tuned for a side-by-side comparison.)


A deep coppery red and lingering legs.


Complex wood notes, thanks to the second barreling in the toasted wood, and caramel, pepper, and vanilla.


Lots of well-rounded wood right up front, fading into a gentle honey and a deep, rich, super-satisfying butterscotch. There’s a lot more going on here than your ordinary rye, a lot deeper and more complex. Not so hot that it needs a touch of water, but I gave it some to see what opens up. It revealed a touch of cherry cough drops, a little cinnamon and a buttery smooth finish. The more it sat and breathed, the more chocolate came out. Now we have all of my favorite flavors from older vintages gathered in a much younger juice.
