45% Acc/Vol, 90 Proof
Coming from one of our favorite distilleries, Buffalo Trace, it’s surprising that you can find this 10-year-old readily available most times of year. We picked this one up at our neighborhood shop a couple of months ago and it only cost $35 bucks. The mash bill is undisclosed, but it tastes like high wheat. One of the things we love about this bourbon is that you can find it pretty regularly at a good price, which can’t be said for most 10 yr plus bourbons.
The nose reminds us of sitting around a campfire with good friends. Its smells of oak (fire wood), marshmallow and honey with some alcohol thrown in for good measure. There is also some strong citrus notes reminding us of a good mixed drink with a freshly peeled twist. At first sip, there’s a lot of brown sugar and honey with a hint of oak. There is also a hit of pepper mixed in that takes you by surprise. The finish is one of toffee and honey with a touch of dry leather. This bourbon seems prefect for the start of football season as the night temperatures start to drop and nights become about bonfires, bourbon, and buddies.
